ONEMUC Approach
ONEMUC takes a One Health approach to understanding how respiratory mucus shapes the transmission of zoonotic influenza A viruses across humans, animals, and their shared environment. We combine human and animal mucus sampling with airway models, biochemical and biophysical analyses, virology, and personalized measurements of air pollution and other environmental exposures. By comparing seasonal and emerging influenza strains - including H5N1 - we will identify how mucus composition, barrier properties, and environmental conditions influence viral stability, penetration, and infection. Integrating these findings through computational risk assessment, ONEMUC will develop a rapid test system to support the evaluation of emerging viruses and strengthen outbreak prevention and response.
